Focus and Scope

BIOTROPIA, The Southeast Asian Journal of Tropical Biology is a scientific publication of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) – Southeast Asian Regional Center for Tropical Biology (BIOTROP).  It publishes articles in the broad areas of tropical ecosystems and environmental impacts, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, and environmental and forest biotechnology.

Starting from 2012, BIOTROPIA has been successfully indexed by SciVerse SCOPUS (Elsevier), CrossRef and DOAJ.

Articles published in the journal are papers reporting results of original research, reviews on specific topics not available elsewhere in up-to-date form and short communication in which advances in knowledge of significance are briefly announced.

Submission of paper is taken to imply that it has not been submitted to other journals and that, if accepted, will not be published elsewhere.  All papers submitted for publication in BIOTROPIA are evaluated by reviewers/experts in the field and subjected to editorial revision. Authors may suggest names of potential reviewers. BIOTROPIA uses anonymous reviewing, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are kept confidential.

Peer Review Process

BIOTROPIA is a peer-review journal. The journal adopts the blind peer review process to prevent any conflict of interest. The review process consists of one internal review conducted by the Editorial Board of the journal and two external reviews conducted by the external reviewers coming from the Authors' country and overseas. Therefore, Author(s) and reviewers may not know each other and the review will be accomplished objectively.

The first review process is the internal one. A manuscript will go to the external review process only if the internal review result is to accept or to modify. The manuscript will be rejected should the result is to reject.

The external review results have four combinations, namely:

accept-accept=accept, meaning that the manuscript is accepted for publication without (a lot of) correction;

accept-modify=modify, meaning that the manuscript needs to be revised following the reviewers' suggestion before being published;

accept-reject=requiring 3rd review result, meaning that the manuscript needs the 3rd review result to reach a decision (to accept, to modify or to reject);

modify-reject=reject, meaning that the manuscript is rejected for publication.

BIOTROPIA is committed to actively combating plagiarism and publishing original research. Therefore, we always check all of the submitted manuscripts to make sure that the manuscripts have not been published elsewhere. Plagiarism checking is carried out using a proofreading software called Grammarly, and also manually using search engines or indexing engines among others Google, Science Direct’s journal list, EBSCO ‘s journal lists etc. by entering paper’s title as the keywords.
